"Single8" is a motion picture film format introduced by Fujifilmin 1965 as a competitor to Kodak's immensely popular Super 8format, which launched the same year.

While both were designed for the amateur home movie market, they had key differences.

Key Features of Single8:

Single8

  1. Cartridge Design:

    • Super 8:The film is entirely housed in a single plastic cartridge. You drop it in the camera, shoot, and send the entire cartridge to the lab.
    • Single8:Uses a two-part cartridge. The film is on a supply spool, and you thread it onto a take-up spool inside the camera. This design was more similar to an audio cassette.

  2. Film Base & Gate:

    • Super 8:Uses a thicker acetate (or later polyester) base. The pressure plate is built into the cartridge itself.
    • Single8:Uses a thinner, stronger polyester base (Fujicolor's "Estra" base). The pressure plate was built into the camera, not the cartridge. Fuji claimed this allowed for a flatter, more stable film plane and potentially sharper images.

  3. Film Stock:

    • Single8 offered some unique stocks, most notably Fujichrome RT25(later RT200), a low-contrast, fine-grain reversal film prized for its cinematic look. It also had high-speed stocks like 250D and 500T.

Comparison with Super8:

FeatureSuper 8 (Kodak)Single 8 (Fujifilm)
CartridgeSelf-contained, drop-in.Two spools, requires threading.
Film BaseThicker acetate/polyester.Thinner polyester ("Estra").
Pressure PlateIn the cartridge. In the camera.
Market ShareDominant, worldwide standard.Niche, primarily popular in Japan.
AvailabilityFilm still produced (from Orwo, etc.).Discontinued(final stocks ~2013).

Legacy and Status Today:

  • Market Failure:Despite technical advantages claimed by enthusiasts, Single8 lost the format war. Super8 became the universal standard due to Kodak's marketing, simpler drop-in loading, and wider camera availability.
  • Cult Following:Single8 retains a cult following among film purists who swear by the image quality of stocks like RT200.
  • Discontinued:Fujifilm ceased production of all Single8 film stocks in the early 2010s. It is now truly obsolete.
  • Modern Super8 Revival:While Single8 is gone, there has been a significant revival of Super8. New cameras (like the Logmar digital-hybrid), scanners, and fresh film stocks from companies like Orwokeep the 8mm format alive for artists and hobbyists. Single8 cameras can only be used with expired, frozen stock.

In short, Single8 was Fujifilm's technically distinct but commercially unsuccessful competitor to Super8.It is a fascinating footnote in film history, remembered for its unique design and beloved by a niche group of filmmakers.
